I have spent over 2 days now trying to install .NET Framework, and I don’t know what to do next, so I am rather desparate. Not sure that will make a difference but I thought I'd see. (They have you run Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool.) The Windows7 team really needs to consider this since MSI is a superior technology to these homebrew setup systems that appear every major OS release. .net Framework Setup Cleanup Utility I guess I am thinking that while performing all this, no other programs should be running in the back ground? It sounds like you've already tried the cleanup tool and it didn't help either. I assume that when I use the cleanup tool and then re-install the .NET Framework, etc – all that should be done in person as opposed to remote control – correct? What I’d suggest doing in this case is re-installing the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (and optionally, you can install the .NET Framework 4 if you have any programs that need it). Should I reinstall 3.5 SP1 or go to 4.0 ? basic features: (repairs system freezing and rebooting issues , start-up customization , browser helper object management , program removal management , live updates , windows structure repair.) The Install Msi Runtime 3.1 Failed error is the Hexadecimal format of the error caused. From the blog post at blogs.msdn.com/…/8803442.aspx, these are KB948610 and KB948609. There can be many events which may have resulted in the system files errors. If you are not using chained packages, try looking for errors in the Event Viewer.
